Scott Dow has decided to release his innovative and heralded office pool-style game, based on the results of professional football games, to a select market for the 2007 professional football season. The objective of MyPointPool.com is to provide a professional, reliable and user-friendly way for people who want to conduct a "PointPool" with his or her friends, college buddies, co-workers, or within a community such as at a local pub or clubhouse. What is a PointPool?
The impetus for the pool has been boredom with the office pools of the day. Whether the over the top time requirements of a fantasy league or the simplistic, boring nature of picking some large slate of games with or without point spreads, Dow wanted to create a fun, compelling contest that would involve strategy, planning and provide season-long entertainment.
The original pool was organized primarily around four ideas.
First, it would run the entire regular season plus playoffs. Winners were only crowned AFTER the title game.
Second, players would receive an initial stake of 50 points with which to wager.
Third, each player would be randomly assigned two games per week on which to wager. To win your wager, your team had to WIN the game. Point spreads meant nothing.
Finally, each player had a unique schedule so each upset would impact only a couple of players.
People said that they loved having a rooting interest in teams winning games, not covering point spreads. The pool grabbed their interest in games they otherwise wouldn’t watch. They also loved the strategy of managing their point totals and, of course, the sheer joy of being able to revel in other’s misfortunes.
One person acts as "administrator" for each pool but the web site does virtually all the work. The administrator merely names the pool, invites participants and sets a few parameters. Each player logs onto the website to wager his or her points, check their schedules and underdog odds, print out each week’s wagers and monitor results. The game is simple yet compelling, growing more and more entertaining as the season progresses through the regular season and playoffs.
